Starship never explained what they meant by “we built this city on rock and roll.” For all we know, they might have had big data to back their claim. Music intelligence masterminds at the Echo Nest certainly do.

By combining data on artists’ hometowns with their genre, the Echo Nest was able to figure out which cities produced which kinds of music. The results ranged from obvious (Chicago loves Chicago House) to surprising (San Francisco can’t get enough Ethiopian pop). Take a look to get to know the sounds of your city.

New Yorkers, stop by The Foxgrove and learn to create your own music.
